Poetry erupts in Laguna as
The
Earth Speaks

The 2nd Annual Orange County Poetry Blast

Over the last few years more and more signs have emerged indicating the EARTH is not happy. Volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and hurricanes are only a very small portion of the planets truly amazing vocabulary. Most of us have long ignored its ancient wisdom making the Earth feel isolated and alone. Most experts now agree its patience and skin (Ozone Layer) is wearing thin - theres no more time to waste!

On August 2nd, from 7-11PM, immediately following the 1st Thursdays Artwalk, HelpBlueWater.com will stage a poetic eruption as Orange Countys top artists and Mystery Musicians converge to translate the planets unspoken language at the 2nd Annual Orange County Poetry Blast.

Orange Countys largest poetry forum has received rave reviews from both the audience and press and will feature many of its top professionals as they descend on Laguna for an evening of inspired expression.

Orange County poetry is an emerging art form. Here in our area, we have several gifted poets who have no substantial public avenue for demonstrating their art. Blue Water has been witness to a stunning display of individual genius and talent in our local poets we can hardly wait to share.

This years event will take place from 7-11PM at Club M 680 S. Coast Hwy. and feature preliminary rounds earlier in the evening to allow emerging poets the opportunity to qualify for the chance to share the stage with some of Orange Countys most esteemed professionals.

If you are a poet and would like to be included in this years environmentally themed presentation please contact us: 949.281-6850 x51,

Music

The Blue Water Music Festival is the first festival dedicated to the musicians of Orange County who inspire the community into effective awareness as they present the presents the premier music scene in Southern California. The musicians of Laguna Beach and other cities in O.C., several of whom are at an international level, have always sought to make a musical home here in their own back yard.

We have become familiar with the music of 13 year old Evren Ozan (3X Native American Music Award Winner), Honk (Famous Cult Surf Band), Common Sense (Americas Top American Reggae Band), Eric Henderson (One of Segovias 3 hand choosen students) and the Missiles of October (So Cals favorite Folk Soul Band), but the scene goes much deeper.

British singer/songwriter Jason Feddy, who now calls Laguna Beach his home, was featured on the cover of the prestigious British Time Out magazine (ie. Billboard) and has opened for musical legend Neil Young and toured with international mega acts David Grey, Tears For Fears, the Cranberries and more.

Brett Dennen, who performs predominantly in Laguna Beach, was recognized by National Public Radio:  Rarely does music come along, so unadorned, so pure in spirit, and so eloquently written. –Chris Douridas, KCRW—NPR.  Rolling Stone Magazine, in an article by John Mayer (September 2006), said, Im really into this kid, Brett Dennen. . . . Hes timeless—he paints these gorgeous pictures musically—I want to hear his voice, I want to hear that guitar, I want to hear those melodies. National Public Radio has stated that Bretts song, The Holidays are Here, as The best holiday song written, in at least a decade.

Brett Dennen is currently touring with Sheryl Crow and John Mayer, and is serving as the official international ambassador for HelpBlueWater.com.  He is encouraging other international artists to join our cause. He believes in raising a collective awareness of the state of our worlds environment.

Eric Henderson - www.erichenderson.org
Only a handful of artists possess an intangible quality that allows them to reach past the boundaries of musical style to touch our inner soul. Eric Henderson has been touching souls for many years with his unique ability to communicate with his guitar. Since he first picked up the instrument at the age of six, it was clear that Eric had a calling. At thirteen, Eric was invited to Spain to become one of only three people to study privately with master guitarist Andres Segovia. Having logged nine European and eight U.S. tours over a period of ten years, Eric came back to his hometown of Laguna Beach where he began advancing his guitar technique, composing his own songs and teaching to his many students. Eric has completed several albums, including Castillian Nights, Faces, Cathedral Heights, All My Soul, and Encore, featuring a variety of classical styles as well as his own unique contemporary compositions.

“Henderson’s interpretation of the Spanish classics was flawless” - Los Angeles Times “Eric Henderson had the audience mesmerized with his beautiful performances of the Spanish composers.” - De Telegraaf (Amsterdam
“Eric Henderson plays with exceptional control, drawing on a wide range of dynamics shaped by a keen musical instinct.” - London Times
“The most incredible guitarist I’ve heard in years.” - Willie Nelson

Evren Ozan - www.ozanmusic.com Evren Ozan was six when he discovered the native flute on a cross-country road trip. At the first stop, the Grand Canyon, Evren went straight to the native instruments counter and picked out a cedar flute. He paid for it with all of his trip allowance and has been playing native flutes ever since. Evren has been described as a “Native American flute prodigy” and “an old soul returned to the People.” An eleven year old homeschooler of Anglo, Osage and Turkish descent, Evren currently studies native flute, silver flute and composition with both traditional and non-traditional teachers. For several years Evren was carefully mentored by native instrument maker and musician, Guillermo Martinez.

Evren has an active performance schedule and has performed at powwows, schools, festivals, galleries, churches, nature and community centers, radio programs, local and national television, scholarship drives, weddings, charitable and environmental events, museums and more. He has been featured, among others, in National Geographic’s WORLD Magazine, News from Indian Country, Time for Kids, Student News Network, “Inside Edition,” Scholastic Magazine, New Age Journal, Body and Soul Magazine and many newspapers.

Evren’s first album, Images of Winter, recorded at age 7 and As Things Could Be at age 9, both at Possum Hall Studios in New Hampshire have received widespread national and international radio play, as well as favorable reviews and recognition by Backroads Music for one of 2003’s best instrumental albums. Originally from Massachusetts, Evren lives in southern California and is active in the regional flute circle. His other interests include rock drums, radio controlled model plane flying, skateboarding, and spending time with his pets, especially Belle, his black Lab.

Honk
Honk has its origins back in 1970 with Steve Wood, Don Whaley and Tris Imboden, all from different bands who shared a common desire to make original, adventurous music.  They added members and lost members over the next two years, changing into the band that still plays together thirty years later.  In 1971, Honk expanded by one guitar player, Richard Stekol, and a recording contract with Granite Records, and the next year added a girl singer (Beth Fitchet) and a saxophone player (Craig Buhler).
Then in 1972 Greg MacGillivray, a high school buddy, hired Honk to produce some music for his surf film, Five Summer Stories, unwittingly creating an identity for the band.  Already gaining popularity by that time, Honk soon achieved legendary stature in Southern California through their connection with the film. Their sound track album was a favorite with surfers and music lovers alike, and even made it to #1 in Hawaii.

Record deals with 20th Century records and Epic Records followed, two records were released over the next two years, one bass player was lost (Don Whaley), one was gained (Will Brady), and Honk went on tour.  They toured all over the United States, opening for Loggins and Messina, The Beach Boys, Chicago and Santana, and their popularity grew.  Audiences everywhere were stunned and delighted with their musical energy, variety and plain nerve.  Their repertoire wandered all over the map, going from Mahalia Jacksons gospel music to Freddy Hubbards jazz to Martha and the Vandellas ripping Motown sound,  with a large portion of original rock and roll or folk setting the tone.  Always included in the set were songs from Five Summer Stories for their surf fans.

Honks breakup in summer 1975 sent their fans into mourning.  The members went their own musical directions, but in 1983 reconverged for the reunions that continue to this day.  Each meeting is like a time warp, sending all six members back twenty or thirty years, and they are completely musically reconnected as though no time had passed.  Their fans feel the same way, and show up for their yearly reunions in record numbers, with energy and delight intact.

Jason Feddy - www.jasonfeddy.com Jason Feddy is a British singer/songwriter, recently relocated to Southern California. His highly emotive songs embrace a variety of musical styles : think Dave Matthews meets Neil Finn… At shows and in the studio, Jason sings and plays his songs with an intense passion and plaintive clarity of voice rarely heard in today’s throwaway pop culture. Back in the UK, Jason made 3 independently released albums: Fish On The Moon (1996), Jason Feddy (‘98) and I Thought The Moon Was Meant For Me (‘99) and has toured with The Cranberries, Neil Young, David Gray, Christie Moore, Paul Young, John Martyn, Lisa Loeb, Ben Folds Five, Dr Robert and Tears For Fears to name but a few. A new collection of songs is in currently in production.
Very few solo performers can produce such a full and energetic sound as Jason does, playing his guitar to within an inch of its life. His acoustic playing is exceptional, and his voice so expressive, so controlled, so in tune, he can even sing with a guitar pick in his mouth!” - London’s Time Out magazine
Kella Maxo - www.Maxomusic.com  Aprovocative blend of hip hop and jazz, Kella breathes life and emotion in song on her new solo album Say it Again.  Her music is an extension of the moment, a tribute to getting it together and choosing to evolve.

From the beginning, Kella knew she was destined to sing. As a child, she set her poetry to music. Her in fluences range from the great Billy Holiday to Sade and Prince. As a teen, she with Chico House legends Marshal Jefferson and Byron Stingly, creating the dance classic Love Emergency. On her debut, singer/songerwiter Kella teamed with producer Bobby Jones (Snopp Dogg, Bone Thugs and Harmony, Rev. Run).

I love telling stories in songs, as a writer I am constantly listening and observing, says Kella. My music gives me a chance to fully express all that I have been feeling for so long. Working with Bobby Jones was an incredible experience, he gave me the freedom to create and did not try to fit me in a box.

The results of thier collaboration are simple yet compelling. Kellas use of melody and harmony are on the ear and go down like rich hot chocolate - warm, silky smooth, temptingly sensuous.

Nick I (of Common Sense) 1st Solo Album  - Laguna Beach based Nick I (Nick Hernandez) created common Sense and writes the Common Sense music and is the lead singer of Americas favorite Reggae band. With a SoCal background and a small beach town attitude, Common Sense took ther reggae-rock influences and created their own style. Nick Hernandez started Common Sense in Santa Barbara while studying music at UCSB. His soulful vocal style and natural stage presence gained the group an immediate loyal following. He then moved back to South Laguna where he joined up with Billy Sherman whose upbeat guitar and melodic sensibility gained Common Sense more attention.

Larry Young grew up in Houston, playing bass in rock and reggae bands. He moved to California where his funky bass style fit the band perfectly. Drummer Drew Hester added his rock steady beats completing the band sound. This new lineup went on to record Common Sense’s first album, Live at the Belly Up. Common Sense went on to make four more records and has been playing live shows around the country non-stop. Their sound has been constantly evolving and their message becoming more powerful. Nick is raned top 10 nationally as a skimboarder and is an accomplished surfer. He also donates much of his time and resources to raising the publics awareness  on autism with his Surfers for Autism foundation.

O’Malley Jones Blessed with a provocative and rich R&B and soul vocal expression, OMalley Jones combines innovative stage choreography and a flashy performance style with audience participation and involvement. He can shout it with authority or sway and swing it with patented gestures while he offers standard renditions made famous by the best in the business as well as exhilarating original tunes. With its thrilling big orchestra sound and compelling vocal performance by OMalley Jones, funk, soul and blues revue “Keep It Real” has got what it takes to bring an audience to their feet, make women swoon and generally bring back the joy of a time when music was filled with soul. Whether you are GenXer or a Baby Boomer, O’Malley‘s brew of high-energy, vintage fun, soul and blues means everyone will find something they like to listen and dance to.

Elvis Schoenbergs Orchestre Surreal - www.eschoenberg.comHe began as a small boy…with a dream and a baton. A dream that one day all the world would hear his cool, clear vision of classical music rising from its humble origins in the backwaters of Mississippi to merge with the driving rock ‘n roll known to all of us lo these many generations. He was soon joined by others who shared his vision..

The acclaimed Elvis Schoenberg (Ross Wright) has written music for film, television, and the stage. He now exposes his diverse background and bizarre eclectic tastes with the Orchestre Surréal the most surreal Orchestra youll ever experience.

Rob Eller - http://www.robeller.com Born and raised in St.Catharines, Ontario, just south of Toronto, Rob has played music his whole life. He started playing guitar when he was nine years old. He started his first band at eighteen with some high school buddies, and toured the bar circuit of most of eastern Canada under the name of Common Language. Rob came to Laguna Beach for a vacation in ‘96, quickly fell in love with the beach town, and ended up staying. Since then Rob has been making a living playing his music in bars all over Orange County, with growing popularity. Eller recently finished his first CD, titled Extacy on which he played every instrument, recorded and produced himself, and has just sold out his first 1000 copies, although they are still available from his web site.

Ray Jordan - The Orange County based acoustic vocalist (R7B, Funk, Pop Jazz) known by his friend as the Funky Dude is one of those rare artists that sounds instantly warm, instantly familiar, but yet incredibly original.- Geronimo Broth.

The Girls have been entertaining Orange County with their sweet blend of vocals, wide range of musical styles and nuttiness for a long time.  They released an album produced by Steve Wood called That’s What Dreams Are For in 1988, and have played at innumerable venues, including  the Sawdust Festival and the Coach House in San Juan. Come hear them perform everything from Shawn Colvin to James Taylor to Andrews Sisters to Steely Dan.  “All three voices are clear, rangy and smooth” - Mike Boehm - L.A. Times.

Poetry

HelpBlueWater.com recently produced the Orange County Poetry Slam, recently featured on the front page of the Coastline Pilot.  Modern poetry is an under-recognized art form. We have been witness to a stunning display of individual genius and talent in our local poets we can hardly wait to share.  Here in Orange County, we have several gifted poets who have no substantial public avenue for demonstrating their art form.  The Blue Water Music Festival includes poetry in its formula.

Visual Arts

Ocean related artists, sculptors, photographers and illustrators will be on hand to convey their perspectives as they display works which were inspired by the ocean and nature.

Surf and Ocean-Related Films

In this years festival we will be showcasing videos created by everyone from professionals to school children. Sit back and watch as they teach us - what they love most about the ocean.

The Worlds Largest
HUG
on Earth Day
April 22nd

Over the last few years more and more signs have immerged indicating the EARTH isnt happy.

Volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and hurricanes are only a very small portion of the planets truly amazing (sometimes subtle) vocabulary.

Most of us have long ignored its ancient wisdom making the Earth feel isolated and alone. Most experts now agree its patience and skin (Ozone Layer) is wearing thin - and there is no more time to waste!

WE MUST ACT NOW!

On EARTH DAY April 22nd the day after the Blue Water Music Festival - HelpBlueWater.com is organizing the Worlds Largst HUG - Hugging the planet is no simple feat. It will take everyone to insure its effectiveness.

Please tell your friends to go to this HelpBlueWater.com where details of the Worlds Largest HUG will be posted after April 1st.

For more information please contact us at info@HelpBlueWater.com
or go to our Calendar for more details.

Dont Miss it for the EARTH!

What You Can Do
To make a difference in the overall global environment
.

Below find out much more about
what YOU can do to make a difference!

It may seem drastic at first, but don not worry - Simply read the list first then pick the habits you CAN adopt into your life. Finding a few new habits to adopt

can make an enormus difference.

So here is a list of things we can all do:

At Home
On Vacation
In Your Car
At Work
When Shopping
Personally

AT HOME

1.   Recycle everything you can: newspapers, cans, glass, aluminum foil and pans, motor oil, scrap metal etc. In many areas, your recyclables get picked up at your curb. 2.   Investigate local recycling centers that take items your garbage hauler does not (scrap paper, plastics, appliances, etc.). 3.   Save your kitchen scraps for the compost pile. 4.   Try to use phosphate-free laundry and dish soaps. 5.   Avoid the use of household pesticides. Fly swatters work very well. 6.   Clean your windows with vinegar and water instead of chemical products. 7.   Use cold water in the washer unless it is necessary to use warm or hot. 8.   Use washable rags, not paper towels, for cleaning up spills and other household chores. 9.   Crumpled-up newspapers are great for washing windows. 10.  Use cloth diapers. The plastic in disposable diapers does not break down in landfills. 11.  Use cloth, not paper, napkins. 12.  Do not put hazardous substances down your drain or in your trash (paint thinner, furniture polish, etc.). Dispose of them on designated hazardous waste collection days. 13.  Do not use electrical appliances for things you can easily do by hand. 14.  Re-use brown paper bags and grocery plastic bags (recyclable) to line your trash can or waste basket. Re-use bread bags, butter tubs, etc. 15.  Use re-usable containers to store foods:not plastic wraps and foil. 16.  Write to companies that send unwanted junk mail:ask them to take you off their list. 17.  Save your coat hangers and return them to the cleaners. 18.  Take unwanted, re-usable items to a charitable organization or thrift shop. 19.  Do not leave water running needlessly. 20.  Install a water saving shower head. 21.  Set your water heater at 130 degrees. 22.  Have your water heater insulated free of charge by your utility company. 23.  Turn the heat down and wear a sweater. 24.  Lower your house temperature by one degree per hour for every hour you will be away or asleep. 25.  Turn the lights off when you are out of the room. Ditto with the TV. 26.  Get a free energy audit from your utility company. 27.  Burn only seasoned wood in your wood stove or fireplace. 28.  Start a compost pile. 29.  Plant shrubs and trees in your backyard that provide food and shelter for birds and other creatures. 30.  Feed the birds. 31.  Put up bird houses and baths. 32.  Pull weeds instead of using herbicides. 33.  Learn about natural insect controls as alternatives to pesticides. 34.  Landscape with plants that are not prone to insect and fungus problems. 35.  Ignore caterpillars and most native leaf chewing insects. Let birds and insect predators take care of them. 36.  Use beer traps for slugs instead of baiting with poisons. 37.  Use organic fertilizers:good ol manure helps condition your soil and fertilizes at the same time. 38.  If you use pesticides, herbicides or fungicides, do not throw leftovers in trash, down your drain or into a storm sewer. Dispose of them on a hazardous waste collection day. 39.  Compost your leaves and yard debris or take them to a yard debris recycler. Burning them creates air pollution and putting them out with the trash is a waste of landfill space. 40.  Use mulch to conserve water in your garden. 41.  Plant things that do not require so much water. 42.  Take extra plastic and rubber pots back to the nursery. 43.  Large expanses of lawn are not good habitat for other creatures, plus they usually must be maintained with chemicals and extensive watering. Dig up some of your grass and plant native shrubs or trees instead. 44.  Plant short, dense shrubs close to your homes foundation to help insulate against cold. 45.  Sign up for a renewable power option from your local utility company. (Back)

ON VACATION

46.  Turn down the heat and turn off the water heater before you go. 47.  Carry re-usable cups, dishes and flatware 48.  Make sure your plastic trash does not end up in the ocean. 49.  Do not pick flowers or collect wild creatures for pets: leave animals and plants where you find them. 50.  Do not buy souvenirs made from wild animals. 51.  Watch out for wildlife: give consideration to all living things you see crossing the road. 52.  Build smaller camp fires. (Back)

IN YOUR CAR

53.  Drive sensibly: do not waste gas. 54.  Keep your car tuned up. 55.  Carpool. (Click here for more info) 56.  Use public transit. 57.  Ride your bike or walk instead. 58.  Buy a more gas efficient car, or a hybrid and ask what ever happen to the electric car? Then rent the movie anbd find out! 59.  Recycle your engine oil. 60.  Keep your tires properly inflated to save gas. 61.  Recycle your old tires. 62.  Keep your wheels in alignment to save your tires. 63.  Do not litter. (Back)

AT WORK

64.  Start an office recycling program for office and computer paper, cardboard, etc. 65.  Use scrap paper for informal notes to yourself and others. 66.  Print things on recycled paper. 67.  Print or copy on both sides of the paper. 68.  Use smaller paper for smaller memos. 69.  Re-use manila envelopes and file folders. 70.  Hide the throw-away cups and train people to bring their mugs to meetings. 71.  Route things around the office or post non-urgent communications rather than making multiple copies. 72.  Use the stairs instead of the elevator. 73.  Office building landscape does not have to be sterile lawns and bedding plants. Plant trees and shrubs the birds will like. 74.  Put a bird feeder outside your office window. It is a great conversation piece. (Back)

WHILE SHOPPING

75.  Do not buy food or household products in plastic or Styrofoam containers if there is an alternative (milk and egg cartons, vegetable oils, butter tubs, etc.) They can not be recycled and they don not break down in the environment. 76.  Do not buy disposable anything. Paper plates and towels, Styrofoam cups, etc. are extravagant wastes of the worlds resources. 77.  If you must buy disposables:buy paper products rather than plastics, rather than Styrofoam. The manufacture of Styrofoam depletes the ozone layer. 78.  Buy durable products and keep them a little longer. Cheap furniture, clothes and appliances often have short life spans. 79.  Check the energy rating on major appliances you buy. 80.  Read labels and buy the least toxic product available for cleaning, pest control and other jobs. 81.  Put your parcels into one big sack instead of collecting several small ones. 82.  Do not buy things with excess packaging (individually wrapped cheese slices, apples on a paper tray wrapped with cellophane, etc.) 83.  Buy in bulk: reduce pollution that comes from the manufacture and disposal of many small packages. 84.  Ask questions:do not buy products that are hazardous to the environment or that were manufactured at the expense of important animal habitat. 85.  Buy locally grown food and locally made products when possible. 86.  Do not buy products that come from endangered animals. 87.  Do not keep exotic pets. (Back)

PERSONAL EFFORTS

88.  Join a conservation organization. 89.  Volunteer your time to conservation projects. 90.  Give money to worthy conservation/environmental causes. 91.  Check your lifestyle:think about the effects of your daily actions on the environment. 92.  Take advantage of the Non-Game Wildlife check-off on your tax form. 93.  Vote for candidates that share your sentiments. 94.  Read books and articles on wildlife and environmental issues. 95.  Watch nature programs on TV. 96.  Subscribe to conservation or environmental publications. Purchase them as gifts for others. 97.  Convert by example:encourage other people to save resources, too. 98.  Tease, cajole, or persuade your family, friends and neighbors for not recycling, not being energy conscious, etc. 99.  Complain to merchants about excess packaging, use of plastics, etc. Write letters to companies. Patronize merchants who are environmentally conscious. 100.  Write your legislators when you have an opinion about pending legislation on environmental, land use and other issues. 101.  Teach children to respect nature and the environment. Take them on a hike, help them plant a tree or build a bird house, buy them a nature book or subscription to a wildlife magazine.
